Captain William Fitzgerald III was born in Virginia on February 8, 1786. He was the seventh child of American Revolutionary War patriot, Captain / Major William Fitzgerald II and Sarah Epes Fitzgerald. Captain William Fitzgerald III's maternal grandfather, Francis Epes, served the patrotic cause during the American Revolutionary War in the Virginia House of Burgessses at Williamsburg. Captain William Fitzgerald III was married to Lettice Greenhill Williams on his birthday, February 9, 1809 in Virginia by the Reverend John Jones.
The Fitzgerald family came to Alabama in 1820 and their home was named Ingleside, opposite Captain Charles Swoope's home in Wheeler, Alabama. William and Letty were childless but adopted their niece and nephew, William Fitzgerald IV and Sarah Epes Fitzgerald Watkins.
