Lifelong Alaskan John Phelps, 79, passed away of Cancer at Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, AK on November 4, 2021.

His ashes will be scattered in John's favorite place in Resurrection Bay.

John was born in Anchorage, AK on October 12, 1942 to Walter Phelps and Betty Betke. He was in the Alaska Army National Guard as Colonel from Nov. 26, 1963 to July 8, 1994, during that time, he met and married his wife Margie "Katie", they were married from January 8, 1964 until May 3, 2001.

After retiring from the National Guard, John worked for FedEx from 1994-2002. He was a member of the Pioneer Club and Elk's Club. John loved spending time catching up with family and friends; golfing; fishing; hunting; supporting, enjoying the scenery of Alaska; harassing the Anchorage Assembly and other local officials.

His family wrote, "My father was the best father a girl could ever have. He showed me how to be strong, kind and that family comes first." – Selina.

John was a respected, loved and admired man. He was beloved by many, and always willing to lend a hand, and loved picking up and taking people to the airport.

He has a message for his family and friends: "life goes on."
Survivors include his sisters Donica, Marilyn, Joleen, Elva Fay, Audrey, Elissa and Sophie; brothers Rob and David (both veterans); son Rod; daughter Selina; and granddaughters Chyanne, Stephanie, Amber and Rachel.

He was preceded in death by his mother Betty Theresa Betke (Semple); and brother Michael, who was also a veteran.
