Nancy, 30-year Farmington Hills City Council member, mayor, and tireless advocate for our community's youth and families, entered eternal life on Monday evening, November 22, 2021, at Commerce Comfort Care Senior Living. She was 88.
Nancy was born April 3, 1933, in Anderson, IN, to the late Clinton and Cora (Hutton) Stansberry. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 46 years, Charles, on July 7, 2004.
Nancy, a public relations professional by trade, was first elected to Farmington Hills City Council in 1989 and retired from council in 2012. Her commitment to our community is seemingly unmatched. Her endeavors, too numerous to adequately note, include decades of work to benefit the Farmington & Farmington Hills Foundation for Youth & Families, the After School program and youth programs in general, her creation of the Mayor's Youth Council, and her initiative that created SAFE — Suicide Awareness for Everyone.
Surviving are five children, Todd Bates, Andrea (Nick) Kyriacou, Brian (Kimberly) Bates, Barry (Ann) Bates, Timothy Bates, and Ralf (Sinka) Wagner; five grandchildren, Joshua Bates, Jason Bates, Nancy Carol (Scott) Horvath, Aimee (David) Lierman, Andrew (Delilah) Bates, Markus Wagner and Sophie Wagner; great-grandchildren, Olivia (Kyle) Milliner, Vincent Horvath, Amber (Chris) Greene, Chase Hawkins, Blake Hawkins, Alyssa Heath and Anna Heath; and great-great-grandchildren, Gabriel Bousman, and Lincoln and Loralei Greene. In addition to her husband, Nancy was preceded in death by her sister, Patty Ann (the late Ben) Dorsey, and an infant son, Ross Bates.
The Bates family will receive guests at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home on Sunday, November 28, from 2-6 pm, and Monday, November 29, from 2-8 pm.
Nancy's funeral ceremony is planned for Tuesday morning, November 30, 10:00 am (in state 9:30 am) at Faith Covenant Church, 35415 W. 14 Mile Rd., (at Drake), Farmington Hills.
Entombment in the Glen Eden Mausoleum will follow the funeral luncheon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes are suggested to C.A.R.E.S. of Farmington Hills.
Kindly keep Nancy and her family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
