He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, a Mason since 1952 with Laurel Masonic Lodge in Detroit and Cookeville Masonic Lodge #266 and member of Baxter United Methodist Church. Robert retired in 1983 as support superintendent with the US Postal Service in Warren, Michigan with over 31 years of service. In retirement, Robert was an avid golfer and maintained a huge garden full of flowers and vegetables.
He leaves behind his sons: Gary (Barbara) Maxwell of Destin, Florida, Alan (Elizabeth) Maxwell of Michigan, Lary Maxwell of Bolingbrook, Illinois; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years: Betty June Bean Maxwell on June 6, 2021; sisters: Lela Ruth Maxwell and Alda Kathleen Pippin; brothers: Oron, Coron, Hillard, Willard, Lindon, Alvin, Everett, Dallas, Arnold and Harry Maxwell (he was the last of his 12 brothers and sisters); great-grandchild: Riley Paige Maxwell.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 10, 2021 at the Baxter Chapel of Hooper Huddleston Horner Funeral Home with Bro. T.J. Bennett officiating. Private family interment with military honors by the Veterans Honor Guard followed in the Samuel Maxwell Cemetery.
