John was the son of William Harrison Irwin and wife Phoebe, who married in 1841 in Ohio. William married four times and Phoebe was his first wife. Phoebe and William had 5 children, all born in Meigs Co, Ohio. Phoebe died in 1854 and William married a 2nd time later that year. The family moved from Ohio and had settled in Fremont Co, Iowa by 1856.

William and Phoebe's two oldest sons, Emerick Irwin and John M Irwin, served with Co A 4th Iowa Cavalry. William served with Co F 15th IA Infantry. He was severely wounded at Shiloh and was discharged from the service on account of his disability.

John M Irwin was a resident of Fremont Co, Iowa when he enlisted as a Private in Co A 4th IA Cavalry at the age of 18. He mustered out on 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia. He married Ellen Morricle in 1872 in Fremont Co, IA. In the 1880 Census he was not married and was a miner in Sante Fe, NM. By 1910 he was living in California.

John died at the age of 82 years while living in Chico Co, California.
