ADRIAN – Donald Alvin Bates age 93, of Adrian, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, November 17, 2021 at Charlotte Stephenson Manor.
Don was born on April 29, 1928 to Alvin H. and Anna (Gray) Bates in Detroit, MI. He was raised in the Detroit area and went on to attend Highland Park Community College. Don served his country in the United States Army from 1952-53.
On June 25, 1949 Don married Joan L. Bodkin, in Detroit, and they were blessed with over 60 years together before her death on January 19, 2010.
Don's leadership was evident in his banking career which started at Adrian State Bank where he served as President. He retired from Key Bank in Ypsilanti. Don was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Adrian. Don enjoyed golfing in his free time.
He is survived by his sons, David (Denise) Bates of Fairbanks, AK and Christopher Bates of Adrian; granddaughter, Julie Ann Bates (Richard McKinstry); granddaughters, Aubrey and Olivia McKinstry; and siblings, Dale Bates and Barb Culver. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Joan.
