He was born on January 30, 1955 in New Hanover County; the son of the late George Powers and Annie Catherine Barden Matthews. He was also predecease by a brother, George Powers Matthews, Jr.
David was a 1974 graduate of Wallace-Rose Hill High School and was proud to be a "Bulldog". He was a devoted member of Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church as well as a member of the Rose Hill Fire Department.
Surviving to cherish his memory is his son, Frankie Matthews of Rose Hill; his siblings, Catherine Matthews Hoffmann and husband, Scott of Charlotte, John Matthews and wife, Lezlie of Topsail Beach and Laura Matthews of Oak Island; nephew, George Matthews; niece, Katie Claire Hoffman and husband, Andrew; great nieces, Grace Stocker and Margot Stocker; cousins, Cecil Rhodes and Caroline Spivey and numerous extended family and friends that loved David dearly.
David was loving father and caring brother, uncle and cousin. He enjoyed people and never met a stranger. David was affectionally known as "Poodle" and "Mr. Rose Hill" by his friends. Throughout his life, David quietly and generously served others volunteering his love, time, knowedge, and humor wherever needed. He enriched the community in which he lived and will be greatly missed. One can be sure that his legacy will live on forever in the lives of those he loved and touched.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00a.m. on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church with Reverend Brian Doles officiating.
Burial will follow in Rockfish Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
