Jose E. Diaz MD, died at home surrounded by his family on Monday, October 25th at the age of 96.
Dr. Diaz received his medical degree in 1949 from the University of Havana followed by an orthopedic fellowship at Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children in Springfield, MA. He then returned to Cuba where he was a member of the Dr. Julio Iglesias group at the Organización Nacional de Rehabilitaci6n de Inválidos (National Organization for the Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons), the ONRI hospital in Havana.
He emigrated from Cuba in 1961, re-doing both an internship and an orthopedic residency in Chicago. After enough snow storms, blizzards and ever seeking the sun, he relocated to Fort Lauderdale in 1968 where he joined the Fort Lauderdale Orthopedic Group, also know as FLOG, as one of the first orthopedic surgeons in Fort Lauderdale.
Dr. Diaz had a long and prolific career as an Orthopedic Surgeon in Fort Lauderdale. He served as Chief of Staff at Imperial Point Medical Center from 1978-1980. He was a founding member of the Broward County Hand Society where he engaged with community surgeons having a similar vision in pursuit of Hand Surgery. He is remembered by those that scrubbed with him in surgery by his red suspenders and never ending and meticulous patient care. After closing his private practice in 1997, he joined the Holy Cross Orthopedic Group from which he retired at the age of 82.
A Catholic Mass will be held at 10 AM on Oct. 28, at St. John the Baptist Church (Bayview Drive). Internment will be at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Cemetery (SR-7/Rt 441 - North Lauderdale) immediately following mass.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ana L. Diaz, his daughters Ana E. and Marta E. Diaz and their husbands, Rich Hinterleiter and James Cox, Jr.
