Lillie Pepper Charlton was dumping trash on the side of County Road 364 south of Valera, in Coleman County when the pickup driven by her husband tragically backed over her.

Lillie Charlton, age 87, of Valera, Coleman County, Texas, died Thursday, June 3, 2004 in Valera. Funeral service will be held Monday at 2:00 p. m. in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Beck officiating. Burial will follow in the Voss Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

She was born Lillie Pepper on February 4, 1917 in Voss, Texas, a daughter of the late Joseph E. J. Pepper and Lila Pricer Pepper. She grew up in Voss and attended school there. On March 3, 1955 she married Elbert Charlton in Kingsville, Texas. She lived many places in Texas and Louisiana, moving to Valera in 1985. She was a homemaker and a member of Valera Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Elbert Charlton of Valera; two sons, Ray and wife Gwen Perkins of Sandia, Texas and Steve and wife Betty Perkins of Kingsville, Texas; one daughter, Joan and husband Richard Fitzpatrick of Hammond, Louisiana; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a niece, Ann Stephens of Valera.
