Major League Baseball Player. For ten-seasons (1968 to 1977), he was a pitcher with the Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Indians, Houston Astros, San Diego Padres and Toronto Blue Jays. Born Jerry Michael Johnson, he was signed by the New York Mets as an amateur free agent in 1963. In 1967, he was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies and made his Major League debut on July 17, 1968. Johnson was acquired by the St. Louis Cardinals (1969) in a multiple player transaction which was of historic note when Curt Flood refused to report to the Phillies. In 1971 while with the San Francisco Giants, he produced career-highs with 12 wins and 18 saves in 67 games-pitched. He had the distinction as being a member of the Toronto Blue Jays during their inaugural season (1977). In 365 career regular season games, he compiled a 48 win, 51 loss record with a 4.31 lifetime ERA in 770 innings-pitched. He died of complications from Lewy Body Dementia and COPD.
