John Patrick Nicholson, 97 of Stuart, Florida, formerly of Indian River Shores, Florida, and Huntington, New York, passed away comfortably at his home with his angelic caregiver Petrona Russell by his side.

John, known to many as Jack, was born February 6, 1924, in Brooklyn, New York, to Dominic and Kathleen (nee Brown) Nicholson, both Irish immigrants.

A graduate with honors from St. Johns Preparatory School, Brooklyn, New York, and The United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York, a gift that prepared him for solid leadership as a Lt. Commander, United States Navy, World War II, and a career spanning four decades in the telecommunications industry, as Executive Vice President/General Manager New York Telephone Company, which has taken on many names in past decades including Nynex, Bell Atlantic and Verizon.

Cherished most was time spent with family and friends at his home in Huntington, New York, and aboard his yacht "Happy Hour" navigating the waters of the Long Island Sound leading to Essex and Mystic, Connecticut, as well as ports on the North Shore of Long Island, and Sag Harbor, New York.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife Alicia (nee Finnerty) of 55 years; son Bryan Patrick; brothers Thomas, Walter, Peter, and Robert.

Survived by his children Kathleen Dougherty (Joseph) of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania; Nancy Flynn (Mark) of Jupiter, Florida; John Patrick Jr. (Candace) of Corona Del Mar; California, Joanmarie Garrettson (Timothy) of Stuart, Florida; brother James (Tina) of Bronx, New York; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; caregivers Rosa Gonzalez and Petrona Russell who will always be a part of the Nicholson family and remain in their hearts.

The family also expresses heartfelt gratitude to Martin Memorial/Cleveland Clinic, Stuart, Florida, for their genuine and compassionate care.

In respect of his World War II service to the United States of America, Congressman Brian Mast (R-Fl) has arranged for a flag to be flown in his honor over the United States Capital, Washington DC.

A mass of Christian burial will take place at St. Andrews Catholic Church, Stuart, Florida, on Thursday, December 2, 2021, at 1 pm. Interment with Military Honors following, Forest Hills Memorial Park, Palm City, Florida.
