When the Civil War was thrust upon the country, Mrs. Patterson, along with her husband, became identified with the Union troops, she as a nurse and he as an Army surgeon. At the close of the war, Dr. & Mrs. Patterson returned to Mansfield to make their home for many years and became leading citizens. She was a member of the First Congregational Church.
