Shelia Yvonne Mitchell was born November 11, 1955 and entered into rest on October 26, 2021. She was the daughter of the late Alexander and Rebecca Mitchell of Savannah, Georgia.
Shelia was educated in the Chatham County School System and was a 1973 graduate of Robert W. Groves High School. She continued her education at Paine College where she received her bachelor's degree in English and later a master's degree in Education from Troy University.
At an early age, Shelia was baptized at Followers of Christ Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia, where she remained until she moved to Augusta, Georgia. Once in Augusta, she became a member of Tabernacle and then joined Unity Missionary Baptist Church where she served as a trustee. Later in life she joined Macedonia Baptist Church and served as a member of the Tribe of Gad. Her love of Christ and her relationship with God was the foundation of her faith and sustained her until the end.
Shelia worked in the Richmond County School System for over 30 years, doing what she loved by educating the masses. Throughout her career, she fulfilled her hearts desire by working with children, teenagers and young adults, until she retired in 2015.
Shelia was a woman who loved and was loved by MANY people, and she never met a stranger. She was known best for her writing sills, her famous tuna fish and her ability to get a prayer through at a moment's notice when called on. She was a woman of great faith and to know her is to love her.
She was preceded in death by her sisters: Cathleen Mitchell, Brenda M. Glover and Carolyn Mitchell. She leaves to cherish her memory, one daughter, Shellman "Shelly" Mitchell (Nyshawn), one son, Jochannon "Jock" Mitchell (Paige); three grandchildren, granddaughter, SaNya Jenae Butler and grandsons, Carter Alexander Butler and Rhyland Kingston Butler; four siblings, Evelena "Sister" Powell-Odar, Alexander "Junior" Mitchell Jr. (Vicky), Charles "Big Hip" Mitchell (Angela) and Kenneth "Ken" Mitchell (Kiwonder).
