In 11th grade, she met the love of her life, Alan, and they were married in 1968. She briefly attended Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN, and made the Dean's List in the only semester she was there. Following this, she worked several jobs to help put Alan through medical school. These included working for the telephone company and doing secretarial work.
In 1972, she began her life as a mother with the birth of her daughter, Kristi. For the next 30 years, she devoted herself to the care of her family. She specifically invested much time and energy into taking care of the needs of Kristi, who had Rett Syndrome.
In 2014, she and Alan retired to the Richmond area to be closer to family, especially their five loving grandchildren. She was a wonderful and generous Grandma. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren play sports, taking them to plays, taking them shopping, doing crafts with them, and just generally spoiling them.
In addition to her family, she loved to travel. She also enjoyed crafts, reading, playing cards and watching the Washington Nationals play.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alan W. Smith; her daughter, Kristi M. Smith; and her parents, Hunter A. and Eva E. Parker. She is survived by her son Dr. Matthew A. Smith and his wife, Shelley; grandchildren London, Sienna, Brady, Autumn and Kenley Smith; siblings Joy Smith (Larry), Andrew Parker (Beth), Evie Scott (Duane) and Steve Parker (Sharon); brother-in-law, J. David Smith (Leigh Ann); as well as a host of other family members and friends.
Family and friends will be received on Sunday, November 21, 2021 from 5-8 p.m. at Bliley's-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street. A Celebration of Life will be held 1 p.m. Monday, November 22, 2021 at Winfree Memorial Baptist Church in Midlothian, Va., with interment to follow in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Va. The family suggests contributions be made to the Rettsyndrome.org in honor of Kristi Smith or Winfree Memorial Baptist Church general fund.
