Helen attended Firefly School till completing grade 8, then took grade 9 and 10 by correspondence, with Pearl Henderson as her tutor. Helen lived in residence in Elfros while completing Grade 11 & 12, graduating in 1947. Helen worked as a Candy Striper at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lestock until she was 18, she was then old enough to pursue her career in Nursing at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon. Helen lived in Residence and made many lasting friendships during those years. Helen is a member of the St. Paul's School of Nursing Alumni and attended many reunions. Upon completing her education in 1953, Helen returned to work at Lestock Hospital.
Helen met Oliver Aamodt, a quiet reserved man, at a local sports day dance. After a short courtship, they were married at the United Church Manse in Kelliher on February 15, 1954. Helen put her career on hold to raise her family consisting of 5 boys and 5 girls. Helen took pride in raising her family, maintaining her home, and tending to the huge garden. Helen also spent time knitting, crocheting, and sewing (she even made time to sew Halloween costumes) along with the usual day to day tasks.
Helen returned to work at Ituna Union Hospital when the children were old enough and worked there till she retired in 1992. A short time later Helen and Oliver moved to Foam Lake. While in Foam Lake, Helen devoted her time to her husband's care, enjoyed her involvement with the Women's Institute and TOPS organizations.
Helen always enjoyed the chance to see her family and their family gatherings. She also enjoyed reading, doing puzzle books, watching game shows, watching the news, doing puzzles, listening to old time music, and playing games.
Helen was predeceased by: her parents, Floyd and Sarah Budd; husband Oliver (2000); brothers, Eugene (Lorna), Alvin (Margaret), James (Joanne), and Lloyd; sisters, Joyce (Raymond) Reidel and their daughter Sandra, and Pearl (Joe) Beros; parents-in-law, Hans and Anna Aamodt; brother Leroy; sisters, Ethel (Mandt) Wilson and their daughter Marth Flaig, Mildred (Cam) King and Gladys (in infancy); brothers-in-laws, Phillip Hoover and George Bast.
