Note: The burial location for W. H. Jett is not known, but he was likely buried on the family farm near Oakwood, Leon Co., Texas.

William was the son of Hamilton Jett and his third wife, Mary McGraw of Lawrence County, Mississippi. He was married about 1858 to Clara Hall Price, the daughter of Jonathan and Sarah Price of Lawrence County.

William grew up in Lawrence County, and in 1850 was enumerated there with his father, step-mother, and siblings. In 1860 he was enumerated there again, with his wife (whose name is written so that it looks like "Azra") and one-year old daughter, Sarah.

About 1 May 1862 William H. went to Brookhaven, Miss. to enlist in the Confederate States Army. He served in Bradford's Battery, Company H, in Wither's 1st Mississippi Light Artillery, and served until the end of the war. In April 1865 he was captured near Blakely, Alabama, and became a prisoner of war on nearby Ship Island. He was liberated the following month, the war having ended. During the war, and perhaps at other times during his life, he had the nickname "Hamp". He served with W. H. Benton, who in 1902 testified concerning his service for his widow's pension application. His half brother, J. W. Jett, also testified on his behalf.

About 1867 or 1868 he moved with his family to Texas, and in 1870 was living in Robertson County. Sometime in the early to mid 1870s he and his family moved to Leon Co., Texas, and remained there, in the vicinity of Oakwood, until his death in 1880, and his widow appears to have remained there until late 1928, not long before her death.

His widow's pension application said he died in 1880, but it must have been early in the year, because his wife was a widow when the 1880 census was enumerated in early July 1880, but the census taker had likely visited in May, because their youngest son, born in March 1880, was given the age of 2/12 year. An undocumented record in Ancestry gives his death as being in January 1880, which is consistent with all other records.

William and Clara had eight children, of whom four were still living in 1900 (per the census). The known children are:

* Sarah Julia, b. MS 27 April 1859, d. San Antonio, TX 9 June 1940, m. c. 1882 John Andrew Hearte, b. TN 5 July 1852, d. San Antonio 1 Jan 1936; five children b. 1883 to 1890. They are buried in Oakwood Cem., Leon Co., TX.
