Civil War Union Army Officer. Served in the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 12th New York Volunteer Infantry, whom he commanded in the Peninsular Campaign. Just prior to the Battle of Second Bull Run, he assumed command of the Third Brigade, First Division, V Corps Army of the Potomac, and was wounded in the subsequent Union defeat in the campaign. he returned to duty to command the brigade after the Battle of Fredericksburg. His final Civil War service was in command of his regiment during the Chancellorsville Campaign. He was discharged from the service upon that Battle's completion, along with the rest of his regiment.
