Ronald Hicks, a lifelong resident of Hyde Park, New York, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family and friends on November 18; he was 80.
Born Ronald Lyle Hicks on January 4, 1941, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, New York, he was the son of the late Robert Lyle and Alice A. Kilmer Hicks, and brother of the late Robert Edward Hicks.
He graduated from Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School in 1960 and became an electrician and a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers until his retirement in 2003.
On August 31, 1962, officiated by the late Father Peter Cody, he married his first love, Diane Mozdzierz of Poughkeepsie, at Saint Peter's Church in Hyde Park.
He self-built a home for he and Diane where they raised their two children.
In his early years, he hunted pheasant along with his Hungarian Vizsla "Rusty," snowmobiled and motorcycled, but cars were his true passion and hobby, which he shared with his identical twin brother, Robert. Known as Ronnie and Bobby, or each as "Hicksey," the pair were indistinguishable, inseparable, and indelibly known for their love and knowledge of cars.
He was a founding member of Hudson Valley Auto Enthusiasts and the annual Locust Grove Car Show in Poughkeepsie. He was also a member of the Antique Auto Club of America, helping to organize and judge a number of local car shows, including the Hudson River Valley Antique Automobile Association at its annual car show in Rhinebeck, New York. Over the years, he rebuilt by hand several classic cars, including an Opel GT, Triumph TR6 and a Corvette Stingray. He was a Life Member of Roosevelt Fire District's Engine Company No. 3, serving as President from 1978 to 1995, and for 27 years helped prepare meals with friends and family each Christmas morning at Marist College for the Eileen M. Hickey Holiday Dinners in Poughkeepsie and Beacon. Ronnie proudly made the mashed potatoes each year, and he and his son, Ron, were responsible for the "Beacon Run," delivering meals to the Springfield Baptist Church in Beacon, New York.
His family will be forever grateful for his love, compassion, and his never-ending sacrifices; he always put the needs of others before his own.
In addition to his wife, Diane, he is survived by his daughter, Sherry Lynn Kreuscher of Hyde Park; his son, Ronald Hicks of LaGrange, New York; his two granddaughters, Allison Rae Kreuscher and Alexis Elizabeth Kreuscher of Hyde Park; in-laws, Marjorie Mozdzierz of Poughkeepsie and Patricia and Peter Walaszek of Staatsburg, New York; nieces, Kelly Thompsett, of Clinton Corners, New York, and Karen Geschlecht (Rob Geschlecht), of Conway, South Carolina; family members, Carol Goodemote of Hyde Park, Alicia and Charles DeMarco of Staatsburg, Darryl Walaszek of Staatsburg, Laura and Nino Piccone of Poughkeepsie; and compassionate neighbors Janet Kaminski and Catherine Van Orden.
Calling hours will be held from Monday, November 22, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Route 9 in Hyde Park. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hudson Valley Hospice www.hvhospice.org or Roosevelt Engine Company No. 3, 830 Violet Ave., Hyde Park, New York 12538.
