Also served as a Member of the Indiana State House of Representatives from 1972 to 1976, Delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Indiana in 1972, 2000, and 2004, and as a Member of the Indiana State Senate from 1976 to 1990. In November 2007, Congresswoman Carson announced that she was dying from lung cancer and that she would not seek re-election in 2008. She is probably best remembered for opposing President Bush's request for authority to wage war in 2002. In 1999, she also won enactment of a measure that awarded the Congressional Gold Medal to civil rights figure Rosa Parks. Her own honors include being named Woman of the Year in 1974 and 1991. She passed away in Indianapolis.
