Humanitarian and Philanthropist. Dunn grew up poor in a rural area in England and moved with his family to Canada. He arrived in St. Louis in 1864 with no funds or job prospects. Dunn held several jobs before establishing Dunn's Mercantile & Loan Company, which sold clothing and jewelry as well as made loans. Never forgetting the hard times of his youth, Dunn focused his attention on charitable enterprises. He established a home for friendless boys known as the "Thomas Dunn Memorials Home for Working Boys" in 1930 for poor country youth who wanted to make good in the city and enter the business world. He also created the Thomas Dunn Memorials to ensure that the home could be properly operated and maintained for generations to come. Over 500 boys had been helped by the Thomas Dunn home by the time it was closed in 1960.
