US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served Kentucky's 6th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1979 until 1993. He attended Murray State University, prior to serving with the United States Marine Corps. Following his discharge, he worked as a stockbroker before being elected to and serving in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1972 until 1976. He served in the Kentucky State Senate (1976 to 1978), before succeeding John B Breckinridge in the US House of Representatives. During his tenure in Washington, Hopkins served on the House Armed Services Committee. In 1991, he had an unsuccessful bid for Governor of Kentucky. In 1992, he was appointed by President George H.W. Bush to serve in the United States Department of Agriculture.
