Irene Elizabeth Hoffman
October 11, 1927 - April 30, 2021

Irene Hoffman, the matriarch to our huge and loving family, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2021 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Barb and Roy Carroll. Mom was born on October 11, 1927 in Lake Leelanau to James and Julia Gilland.

She often spoke of happy childhood memories with her 11 siblings. She married our dad, the love of her life, Tom Hoffman on June 12, 1948. They began life on the Hoffman family farm on the Old Mission Peninsula where they lived for 61 years. They had seven children. Their happy lives revolved around farm and family. They also enjoyed traveling and had many, many life long friends.

Mom's life was full and busy. She was an accomplished seamstress, created beautiful needlework, tended abundant gardens and baked delicious goodies. The many who were dear to her were the recipients of these talents and giving these gifts made her heart happy. Mom was a friend to all children, her patience and warm smile drawing them to her. She loved nature, enjoying birds and most of all, walking on her beloved farm. Mom was selfless, kind and loved by all.

As dedicated as she was to her friends and neighbors, our mom treasured her family above all. She was fortunate to celebrate the births of eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Family gatherings at the farm were epic occasions and she was happiest when she was in the midst of the commotion.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom, daughter Patricia Kolarik, sons Bill Hoffman and John Hoffman, granddaughter Kimi Kolarik, as well as her 11 siblings.

Mom will be missed by her children, Sara and Doug Parrott, Barbara and Roy Carroll, Elmer Kolarik, Mary and Michael Sletten, Monica Hoffman, and Susan and John Bawden. Also by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Tracy Carroll, Beth and Adam VanHouten ( Ella, Nolan and Isaac) Jonathan Parrott and Adeline Koh, Scott and Stephanie Parrott ( Ava, Benjamin and Caroline), John Sletten and Kelsey Mercer, Erin and Kevin Derderian ( Benjamin, George and Heidi), Julia and Caleb Sandoval and Thomas Bawden and Sophie Charboneau.
She also had many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She had many, many cherished friends who will also miss her.

Interment will take place at St. Joseph cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to Dad. A celebration will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2021 from 3 to 6 pm at the Cathedral Barn at Historic Barn Park, 1500 Red Dr. in Traverse City. We will raise a glass together and celebrate her long and wonderful life. All family and friends are welcome.
