The Reverend Mr. Ernest Young Averett, 89, of the Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1997, at his residence at the Retirement Community following an extended illness.
Ernest Young Averett was born on July 2, 1907, in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. He was the third and only surviving child of Thomas Young and Lillie Freeman Averett. Mr. Averett was a graduate of Midway High School in Dinwiddie County and graduated from the Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania.
Mr. Averett faithfully served churches in the Franklin, Johnston, and Northampton Counties of North Carolina; the Northampton, Fauquier, and Stafford Counties of Virginia; and in Kensington, Maryland. Later in his career, he was also elected to and served a term on the Virginia Baptist General Board of the Virginia Baptist Association. Mr. Averett retired in 1973, after 37 years in the active ministry.
In the years preceding his retirement, Mr. Averett was honored numerous times for his dedicated service to both his churches and the communities in which he and his family resided. These awards included being chosen as Stafford County, Virginia's "Man of the Year." He was also given the Crozer Theological Seminary Alumni Association Award on 31 October 1960 for his distinguished Christian service to his churches and the community. The 1959 recipient of this particular Crozer Alumni Award had been the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Mr. Averett was married to Janet Raymond Powell in 1937; she preceded him in death in 1973. In 1974, Mr. Averett married Grace McConchie Jenkins; she preceded him in death in 1993.
Mr. Averett is survived by two sons and their wives, John Ernest and Patricia Bagby Averett of Richmond, and Lewis Hobgood and Rebecca Counts Averett of Lynchburg; one daughter and her husband Joan Lee and Bernard Brandau of Kent, Washington; one step-son and his wife, Warren L. Jenkins and Lora Mackie of Warrenton; two step-daughters and their husbands, Anne J. and Donald Moore of Waynesboro and Alice J. and Ray B. Boley of Bealeton. He is also survied by three grandchildren [ERROR; should have read "four" to include Stephanie Victoria Brandau] Irma Averett Polanosky of Poquoson, Lynn Averett Meredith and Timothy Young Averett, both of Lynchburg. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Amanda Michele Shober and Joshua Everett Shober, both of Monroe; and Kayla Victoria Averett of Lynchburg. Mr. Averett is also survived by six step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
Friends may sign the register at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton today from noon until 9 p.m.
Mr. Averett's funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, at Ramoth Baptist Church, 478 Ramoth Church Rd. in Stafford, with the Rev. John S. Farrar, the Rev. William Smith and the Rev. Page Bowman officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service.
