James & Prudence McCown came to NZ in 1884 - they left four children behind in Northern Ireland as they were al married . Their surname in Ireland is McKeown. The change in spelling is due to the accent. The children left in NI were Alexander, William John, Mary (Rainey) and Charlotte (Gilkeson). Mary McKeown Rainey came to NZ with her daughters, Charlotte and Susanna (Annie)in 1921 after the death of her husband George. She always spelt her surname McKeown. In fact she felt very strongly about the spelling. (this info came from my grandmother, Charlotte).
