Theresa Margaret Hayes
April 18, 1928 - November 8, 2021
CHULA VISTA
Terry Hayes, 93, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2021, at Fredericka Manor in Chula Vista, surrounded by her loving family and listening to her treasured Irish music following a struggle with cancer. Though she was the sixth of seven siblings born to Irish immigrants Winifred and Daniel Hayes in Syracuse, New York, she became the de facto center of the large Hayes clan, her long-term home in Pacific Beach a must-stop destination for family and friends visiting San Diego for over forty years.

Terry graduated from St. Patrick's High School in Syracuse in 1946 and then from the New York State College for Teachers in Albany in 1950. After teaching at Keene Central School in Keene Valley, New York, Terry left for sunny and warm San Diego in the summer of 1951, where she worked for the Department of Public Welfare before leaving to earn her commission as an officer in the United States Marine Corps in 1953 in Quantico, Virginia. During her twenty-year career in the Marines, Terry rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, one of the highest-ranking women in the branch, and served in increasingly demanding assignments, including command of the Woman Officer School, Marine Corps Development Command, in Quantico.

Her positions required substantial training in computer science, administration, and leadership. Her career took her to posts in Virginia, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Hawaii, and California

Terry brought the discipline of the Marine Corps and her love for education and social work to the countless volunteer assignments she took on following her retirement from the Marines in 1973. She was an active member of the Women Marines Association. She was a mentor, a confidant, an adviser, a counselor, and a caretaker for many family members and friends, never judgmental, always interested, always sincere, and always quick with an infectious smile and bright laughter. Terry cared for her mother in her homes in Pacific Beach and later Imperial Beach until her death in 1977. Her generosity to everyone she knew and to the homeless of San Diego were unmatched.

Terry was a true daughter of Ireland. She maintained strong contact with many family members and friends in the "old country" and traveled there often, sometimes for months at a time. She was deeply proud of her Irish heritage and was a devoted Catholic. Beyond Ireland, she traveled the world with her sisters, especially Joan and her late husband, George, exploring Asia, Africa, Latin America, South America, Europe, and North America, making friends at every stop. As much as she loved travel, Terry loved to play games, especially Bridge, where she made lasting friendships

Terry was preceded in death by her parents, and her older siblings: Nora Littlejohn, Julia Meehan, Thomas Hayes, Molly Kocourek, and Jim Hayes. She is survived by her younger sister and best friend, Joan Clayton, and twenty-four nieces and nephews and their many children who knew her simply and affectionately as "Aunt Terry."

Funeral mass will be held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 293 H Street in Chula Vista on Thursday, November 18, at 2:00 p.m., followed by a private Celebration of Life.

Private burial will be held on Friday, November 19, at Holy Cross Cemetery in San Diego. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Father Joe's Villages, 3350 E Street, in San Diego.
