William S. "Bill" Mathews, age 93, of Felton, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 7, 2021.
Born in Jersey City, NJ on October 28, 1928, he was a son of the late Harold and Jessie (Nutt) Mathews. Bill proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. After his military service, he worked as a serviceman with his father and uncle for the Mathews Oil Burner Service. He then worked as service manager for the Roselle Globe Fuel Company, retiring after 28 years of dutiful service. An avid traveler, Bill loved taking road trips with his wife, Helen, in their trailer. He also enjoyed camping and spending time in the Pocono's at Lake Adventure. Bill could often be found cheering on his beloved New York Yankees, singing in his church choir, and in his younger years, he was an avid bowler. But he and Helen cherished their time with their family the most.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife, Helen Mathews; and sister, Jean Krautter. He is survived by his sons, William R. Mathews (Cynthia) of Felton, James Mathews (Lori) of Wall, NJ, and David Mathews (Tammy) of Pleasant View, TN; grandchildren, Jennifer Luciani (Claude), Meghan, Gregory (Stephanie), Timothy, Shelby Nelson (Cody), Jillian, Mackenzie Cox (Andrew), and Chandler; and great-grandchildren, Avery and Liam Mathews and Scout Nelson.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:30 am until 12 pm on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at New Castle United Methodist Church, 510 Delaware Street, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 12 pm. Social distancing will be observed and face coverings will be required for all those in attendance, regardless of vaccination status. Interment will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 in Brigadier General William C. Doyle Cemetery, 350 Province Line Road, Wrightstown, NJ.
