Manuel Brittain, 86, of Morganton, passed away Friday, June 15, 2012, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, following a period of declining health.

Mr. Brittain was born June 14, 1926 in Burke County to the late Frank Brittain and Ester Brown Brittain. He was a decorated United States Army Veteran, serving his country during World War II in General George Patton's 3rd Army. He was a former deputy with the Burke County Sheriff's Department, a former owner of B&M Hardware, a truck driver for 16 years with Carolina Freight, and was also employed with United Security. Manuel was a member of American Legion Post 234 and Calvary Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Peggie Carpenter Brittain; daughter, Elaine Brittain McGalliard; great-grandson, Jeremy Hensley; and brothers and sisters, Ruby Deal, Dora "Peg" Pope, Frank Brittain and Robert Brittain. Survivors include his wife, Romilda "Millie" Baker Brittain, of the home; daughter, Sherri Brittain Smith and husband, Thomas; one brother, Howard Brittain; one sister, Callie Carswell and husband, Herbert; two grandchildren, Tonya McGalliard and Shane Donovan McGalliard; two great-grandsons, Justin Hensley and Mickey McGalliard; two great-great-grand-children, Lindsey and Riley Elaine Hensley; step-children, Laura Holtzman and husband, Sam, of Texas, Barbara Purtell and husband, Duane, of Kansas, and Bruce McCrary and wife, Trudy, of Morganton; and numerous step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese. Officiating will be Revs. Leonard Lindsey and Freddy Lindsey. Interment will follow in the Calvary Memorial Gardens.
