Obituary of George Jackson (Jack) Hughes
George Jackson "Jack" Hughes, age 96, of Ooltewah, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 9, 2021.
Jack was a 1943 graduate of Central High School and served our country in the United States Navy during World War II on the submarine USS Gato. He received his B.S. degree from Carson Newman College and received his Divinity Degree from the Southwestern Theological Seminary. Jack served as pastors at churches in Michigan and Tennessee. Jack returned to Chattanooga and taught at East Ridge Junior High School, where he also served as a former East Ridge Commissioner Patriot, actively involved in conservative political issues throughout his lifetime. He then taught at Brown Middle School before returning and receiving his M.S. Degree from the University of Chattanooga. Jack was a teacher at Sequoyah Vocational School and went back to school to obtain his Ph.D. in Vocational Administration. He served as Principal of an English Speaking School in Guatemala. Jack also worked as an iron worker and for the IRS during tax seasons. He was a lifelong Baptist, currently a member of Cornerstone Baptist and Greenwood Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his son, Lynn R. Hughes; brother, Harold Hughes.

Jack is survived by his wife, Geneva Hughes; daughter, Genean "Pixie" (John) Houts; son, Ken (Delilah) Hughes; 4 grandchildren, John "Kip" (Tara) Houts, Brent (Monica) Houts, Allyson Houts Brown, and Rachel Hughes (Blake) Nichols; 8 great grandchildren, Hannah, Jackson, Peyton, Emma, Owen, Lila, Lena, and Willow; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 11 am to 1 pm on Tuesday, November 16, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

A Celebration of Jack's life will follow at 1 pm on Tuesday at the North Chapel with his Pastor Todd McElyea officiating. Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
