11 June 1762: Will of James Glenn, Hanover County. Photocopies from "The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography", Vol. 147, p. 16.

Hanover County probate records were destroyed, but a copy of James Glenn's will survived because it had been forwarded to Abbeville Co., S. C. in 1822 to be used as evidence in a court case in which some of his grandchildren were involved. Since the copy had been certified by the clerk of court of Hanover Co., it has been accepted as valid by the Virginia State Library in which it is located under Accession No. 21376 (From "Union County, S. C. Heritage - Family #234". Cooper Library, Clemson University, Clemson, S. C.

Text of Will: (All original spelling left intact)

"In the name of God amen the 11th day of June 1762, I James Glen of Saint Martin's Parish in the County of Hanover being praised be God, of a sound mind and memory do make this my last will and Testament.

Item - I give to my son GIDEON GLEN all that part of my estate, as is at present in his possession to him.

Item - I give to my son NEHEMIAH GLEN 300 acres of land on the upper side of Great Guinea Creek, including the plantation whereon he now liveth and bounded as by a plan drawn by Robert Harris to him and his heirs forever; together with all that part of my estate he hath now in his possession.

Item - I give to my son NATHAN GLEN 350 acres of land in Cumberland County on both sides the double horsepen branch, including the plantation whereon he now liveth and bound as by a plan drawn by Robert Harris together with one half of the hogs and cattle the said Nathan received on the plantation, and three-fourths of the increase of the said hogs and cattle, and all the rest of my estate that is in his possession excepting a negro man named Pompey and a negro girl named Nan, to him and his heirs forever.

Item - I give to my son JAMES GLEN 350 acres of land in Cumberland County on the upperside of Great Guinea Creek, bounded as by a plan drawn by Robert Harris, and the sum of L35 current money and that part of my stock of hogs and cattle that is in the hands of my son Nathan Glen, to him and forever.

Item - I give to my daughter GEMIMA SYMES all that part of my estate as is in her possession to her and her heirs forever.

Item - I give to my granddaughter FRANCES HARRIS one negro boy names Daniel when she shall arrive at the age of 18 yrs. of marreys.

Item- I give to my granddaughter JUDE HARRIS one negro boy names Charles when she shall arrive to the age of 18 yrs. or marreys.

Item - I give to my granddaughter ANNA GLEN HARRIS one negro girl named Nan when she shall arrive to the age 18 yrs. of marreys.

Item I have to my granddaughter MOLLY GLEN HARRIS one negro boy named Dick when she shall arrive to the age 18 yrs. or marreys.

Item - I give to my grandson PETER HARRIS one negro girl named Jenny.

Item - I give to my grandson TYRE HARRIS one negro boy named Harry.

Item - my will and desire is that if either of my grandchildren that is to say, Frances Harris, June Harris, Anna Glen Harris, Molley Glen Harris, Peter Harris and Tyre Harris should before they arrive to lawful age of Marryes have the misfortain to lose their negro given as before, the loss to be made up out of the indrease of Bess if any the Mother of the said negroes but if their should be no loss then the said negro women named Bess and her future increase should be sold, and the monty arising by such sale to be equally devided between my six Grand Children that is to say (here he names the above grandchildren again).

Item - I give to my daughter HANNAH AUSTIN L5 current money

Item - I give to my daughter MARY HOPKINS, all that part of my fore estate she had already Received.

Item - I give to my daughter ELIZABETH BYASS L40 current money. (pounds sterling)

Item - I give to my daughter ANNA GLEN, my best feather bed and furniture one good Cow and Calf and one pound ten shillings current money.

Item - I lend to my loving wife HANNAH GLEN after the payment of my just debts and the Legacies in this will given, the plantation whereon I now live and four negroes, named Pompy, John, Nan and Sarah and all my person estate not before given during her natural life and after her decease my will is that my daughter ANNA GLEN should have one negro woman named Sarah to her and her heirs forever, then the rest of my estate together with the land and plantation whereon I now live to the same of what kind soever to descend to my son THOMPSON GLEN and the heirs of his Body lawfully begotten forever.

Item - my will and desire is that if my son THOMPSON GLEN should die without lawful issue that then the estate lent to my loving wife and given to both real and personal shall be sold by my executors and the money arising from such sale to be equally divided amongst all my children except'g my Daughters KEZIAH HARRIS and SARAH DABNET, who have already had their part of my estate.

Lastly, I nominate constitute land appoint my sons GIDEON GLEN, NEHEMIAH GLENN and NATHAN GLEN to be the Executors of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year before written.
