Linda Oakley Carter, 73, of Olive Hill, woke in the arms of Jesus on Wednesday, November 10, 2021. She slipped into sleep in the Brinegar home she grew up in surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer.
Linda, the "baby" of Herman and Dorthy Hall Oakley's nine children, was born June 1, 1948. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Lenora Oakley Catron; three brothers, Sim Oakley, Jimmie Oakley, and Bill Oakley; son-in-law, Baxter Stevens; and several nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Johnny Austin Carter, whom she married on April 15, 1967; three children, Dovie Stevens, John "JB" Carter, both of Olive Hill, and Stacey Meyer and husband Evan of Butler, Kentucky; and her pride and joy granddaughter, Addison Hope "Addi" Meyer.
She also leaves two brothers, Wilford Oakley (Shirley) and Louie Oakley (Lucille); two sisters, Sarah Jane Oakley Carver and Arlene Oakley Porter (Glennis); many nieces and nephews; and special neighbors, Jason and Suszanne Jones Holbrook, Isaiah and Sophie Jones, with whom she had a special bond. Not to be forgotten are the many friends, students, and colleagues Mrs. Carter loved in her 21-year teaching career.
She returned to college when her youngest daughter started Kindergarten and did what her college advisor implied she could not do--she earned the teaching degree she had dreamed of since her childhood in Brinegar. Linda not only received her diploma but did so in three years with a 4.0 grade point average and was bestowed the honor of being student speaker at the MSU Summer Commencement in 1985, during which she challenged her classmates to dream, to work toward those dreams, and make a "more perfect world and time for the sharing of those dreams."
In her teaching career at Upper Tygart Elementary, Mrs. Carter forged many lifelong friendships and many students with whom she stayed in contact. One of her biggest joys was watching "her kids" grow up, become the successes she always told them they could be, and have children of their own. She has been blessed with many messages and reminders of them in the past few years and appreciated hearing what they have become. Her inspiration did not go unnoticed. Mrs. Carter was the 2002 Carter County Educator of the Year and the Ashland Inc. Teacher of the Year Award in 2004.
Funeral services will be conducted 12 noon, Saturday, November 13, 2021, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Pastor Evan Meyer officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her parents at the Manning Chapel Cemetery on Mocabee Creek Rd., Olive Hill, Kentucky.
Pallbearers will be "Little" Billy Oakley, Derek Johnson, Mike Williams, Paul O'Daniel, Jason Holbrook, and Suszanne Jones Holbrook.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, November 12, 2021, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.
