Rick was a professional baseball player in the Montreal Expos and Seattle Mariners' minor league farm systems from 1969 - 1978. After retiring as a player, he worked as a minor league coach and manager eventually spending most of the 1990's and 2000's as a major league hitting coach for the New York Yankees (1993 - 1995, 2002-2003), Baltimore Orioles (1996 - 1998), Los Angeles Dodgers (1999 - 2000), Boston Red Sox (2001) and New York Mets (2005 - 2007).
