NOVEMBER 20, 1970 – NOVEMBER 8, 2021

James "Jay" Cowden Bradford III, age 50, of Nashville, Tennessee passed away on Monday, November 8, 2021. Jay was born November 20, 1970. James Cowden Bradford III
James Cowden Bradford III—Jay to all his friends and everyone— unexpectedly died of natural causes on the morning of Monday November 8, 2021. He was the son of the late James C Bradford, Jr. and Lillian Robertson Bradford, and the older brother of Bryan Robertson Bradford.

Jay was born in Nashville, Tennessee on November 20, 1970. He attended Ensworth School and Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, and graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont in 1994. After college, Jay joined JC Bradford & Co. where his career spanned some of the most important functions of the firm. Jay's work at JC Bradford kindled a lifelong love of investing and picking stocks—a pastime that held his interest for years.

Following the sale of JC Bradford in 2000, Jay moved to San Francisco with a new outlook on life that focused on skiing and sailing. Over the years he became one of the most successful and frequent yachtsmen in the Bay Area, where he owned and raced a number of sailboats such as Low Speed Chase and Bright Hour.

Jay launched a number of businesses in his career, but he was most proud of his efforts in automotive finance. He opened Zoom Auto Finance in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and he later cofounded Rodeo Auto in Houston, Texas. Jay truly loved the car business, and he relished the activities and larger-than-life personalities on a busy car lot.

Among many other interests—which included whaling lore, Nordic countries, the Grateful Dead, and bears—Jay was unusually fond of turtles. While Jay was never married and had no children of his own, he often kept a pet turtle and generally had one in a box somewhere in his apartment. He is survived by one Western Box Turtle, Calvin, who misses him terribly.

It's often said that people care deeply for their friends—but for Jay they were the center of his life. He made friends sailing, skiing, in Nashville, in school, and in business—and many places between. He would be honored if his friends would keep him in his memory, and remember the many good times and his distinctive sense of humor.

His service will be held at St. George's Episcopal Church, 4715 Harding Pike in Nashville, Tennessee, at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 13th.
