Dave was the first child born in Oregon and as he got older took on more responsibilities on the farm as the older children left to start their lives. Conditions of the farm were hard and the work of providing for the family was anything but easy. The boys milked cows, raised rabbits and chickens, and hunted to provide food for the family. The girls establish a huge garden that provided vegetables and fruit.
Dave attended school in Arock, Jordan Valley, and Ontario and graduated from high school in Winnemucca while staying with an uncle and aunt and working on their turkey farm.
After high school Dave returned to Arock helping on the family farm and working for friends of the family bringing in additional money. Dave's father became seriously ill and Dave continued to keep the farm running until it was eventually sold after his father passed away. During that time Dave met Shirley Strode and they were married in 1960 and moved to the Oregon Slope area. They had two daughters Carol and Donna and moved to Payette, Idaho in 1968. In 1968 Dave began his 36-year career with the City of Payette in the street department and moved to the city shop where he spent the majority of his career. Dave was also a volunteer firefighter for the City of Payette from 1972 to his retirement from them in 1995.
In 1992 Dave and Shirley divorced and in 1994 Dave met June Oster and they were married in 1995. Dave and June enjoyed camping and dancing as well as the many family gatherings and barbecues they hosted. Dave was an expert mechanic and loved to work on the family vehicles and his talent was always in demand. It is an understatement to say that Dave was beloved by his family and those who knew him. He was the kindest and most gentle man any of us have known He was known for his sly and understated wit and was always listening when you thought he wasn't, surprising everyone with his humorous comebacks.
David was preceded in death by sisters Viola, Erma Jean, Leona, Neva and Margaret, and brothers Floyd and Alvin. He is survived by his wife, June, his two daughters Carol (Steve) Neyman and Donna (Randy) Everitt, his stepchildren, Deborah (Calvin) Castleberry, Doug Oster, and Denease Broadus, grandchildren Sam (Brandi) Everitt, David Griffin, Rene (Chris) Alters, Janaye (Mike) Jansen, Matthew Neyman, Andrew Neyman, Jason Castleberry, Kiera Tucker, Calvin Oster, Anika Sweatland and four great grandchildren. His brothers Harold, Lyndel, Roger and Gerry, and one sister Eunice.
There will be a huge empty space is this family and he can never be replaced. His willingness to help others was one of his trademarks. He worked hard and was as honest a man as anyone ever knew. David Henry Griffin will be greatly missed.
