JAMES ROBERT PIERCE

James Robert Pierce, sheriff of Little River county and a resident of Ashdown, was born near Foreman, Arkansas, February 6, 1884. His youthful experiences were those of the farm bred boy, who pursues his education as opportunity offers and works in the fields when occasion demands. He was educated at Rocks Comfort and continued on the old home farm until twenty-five years of age, becoming familiar with every phase of its development and improvement. At that time he was appointed deputy sheriff under J. O. Patterson and afterwards filled the same position under John H. Hawkins and W. D. Waldrop, serving altogether for ten years as deputy sheriff, after which he was elected to the position of sheriff in 1919 and by reelection is now serving his second term. There is no doubt as to his qualification for this office, by reason of the excellent service which he had rendered as deputy. His work has been highly satisfactory and he has made his name one to be feared by the lawless, while to all law-abiding citizens it stands as a synonym for safety and protection.

Mr. Pierce was united in marriage to Miss Mary Anderson, a daughter of J. S. Anderson, and they have become parents of three children, a son and two daughters: Mary Etna. James Robert and Virginia. Mr. Pierce is identified with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and has held office in the latter. He has always been loyal to the purposes and various activities of these organizations. His life has been passed in Little River county, where he is "Bob" to a countless number of friends. He has a very wide acquaintance throughout the county and enjoys the esteem and goodwill of all with whom he had come into contact.
