David C. Bailey
1932-2021

Salt Lake City, UT—"Ski on what's white and go around what's dark." That was David C. Bailey's grinning advice for how to tackle a white-out snowstorm. Born April 12, 1932, in Nephi, Utah, he died on January 7, 2021, at age 88 in Salt Lake City. Dave was happiest when he was outside and challenged. His family remembers cowering low in his new boat, life jackets wet, while this man from the Utah desert jubilantly piloted towering waves through small-craft warnings on San Francisco Bay. He loved to downhill ski and water ski, ride motorcycles and snowmobiles, negotiate a jeep through impossible terrain. He once drove his camper solo all the way from Guatemala to the north shore of Alaska, seeking remote places with dark skies, and, as his magnum opus, he built an entirely automated astronomical observatory. Originally constructed at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains with assembly help from his then-teenage daughter, the observatory is now proudly run by his son under the stars of southern Utah. His entrepreneurial work life moved his family around the country often until he settled back in Salt Lake in 1978. In the mid 1980's he reconverted to the LDS Church. Like all things, he was 100 percent about it. He married his high school sweetheart who 68 years later was still at his side. In 2011 they lost their son, Michael J. Bailey. Dave is survived by his wife, Alta K. Bailey, his son, Mark E. Bailey (Kirsten J. Allen), his daughter, Camille Bailey Aagard (Robert O. Aagard), and seven grandchildren: Kristen, Nicholas, (their mother, Lynn A. Manning); Jessica, Aubrie, Alex, Andelyn, and Brynnlie. Dave will be buried in a private graveside ceremony.
