W.C. was born on November 10, 1943 in Page County, Virginia, to the late James Arthur and Mary Batman Fields.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Betty Fields and his loving daughter, Mary Fields, both of Charlottesville; his siblings, Charles Fields (Jackie), Peggy Davis, and Jimmy Fields (Helen). He is also survived by a special aunt, Virginia McCourry, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
W.C. served his country in the U.S. Navy for 20 years in several ports of call, including a tour of duty in the Vietnam War. After retirement, he worked for several local businesses in the Charlottesville area. He was a member of Cherry Avenue Christian Church which he attended faithfully until his health failed.
W.C. also loved to spend his time fishing, hunting and playing golf.
The family offers sincere appreciation to Dr. Bobby Stokes, his wife, Sue, and his staff; Dr. Mark Prichard and the staff at Martha Jefferson Infusion Center; the staff of Hospice of the Piedmont, Peggy Davis, Margaret Gibson, Jeff Harris and Linda Harris.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Cherry Avenue Christian Church, 1720 Cherry Avenue, Charlottesville, VA 22903, or to the American Cancer Society at P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123.
There will not be a formal visitation, but friends and family are encouraged to attend a walk-through viewing to pay their respects to W.C. on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Hill and Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville.
A graveside service will be held at Riverview Cemetery on Thursday, November 11, 2021 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Stan Martin officiating.
Due to Covid, masks are required inside the funeral home regardless of vaccination status, and are strongly encouraged for those attending the graveside service.
The family will greet friends at the cemetery following the service.
