Donald Washington Simmons
Eagle Rock Resident Was Marine Corps Veteran, CSX Retiree
Donald Washington Simmons, age 86, of Eagle Rock, Virginia passed away early on Saturday, November 6, 2021 with his family by his side.

He was born February 22, 1935 in Iron Gate to the late Abraham Jonathan Simmons, Sr. and Stella Gertrude Clarkson Simmons.

Donald was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps and enjoyed reminiscing about his time in the service.

He later was employed for 43 years at CSX Transportation where he wore many hats throughout his career, most enjoyably that of union representative.

To further provide for his family, Donald was a hardworking farmer in addition to his formal career continuing for years after retirement.

He was a lifelong member of Iron Gate Methodist Church and a member of Clifton Forge Elks Lodge #1065 B.P.O.E.

Donald enjoyed hunting and instilled his love of the outdoors in his children and grandchildren. When relaxing, he could be found in his rocker by the fire watching the Washington football team, CNN, or Gunsmoke.

Donald was fearless, passionate, and larger-than-life and his absence will be a heavy loss to all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Darlene Wimberley; a step-daughter, Jackie Lusk; three brothers, A.J. Simmons, C.L. Simmons and Homer Simmons; seven sisters, Mary Cappalbi, Frances Bober, Hazel Piscunere, Bernice Deisher, Phyllis Jean Huffman, Patsy Griner, and Dorothy Myers.

He is survived by his wife, Robin Bartley Simmons of Eagle Rock; two daughters, Deanna Stepp and husband, Jim of Salem, and Elizabeth Duncan and husband, Rick of Salt Rock, WV; a son, David Simmons and wife, Cari of Chesterfield; a son-in-law, James Wimberley of North Carolina; a sister, Alice Wilkerson of Lynchburg; a brother, Robert "Rob" Simmons and wife, Linda of Covington; two step children, Joel Clark and wife, Heather of South Monroe, LA and Terrance Clark and wife, Amy of Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren, Michael Duncan, Samantha Stepp, Melynda Stoffa, Katie Mohn, Alex Stepp, Ashley Wimberley, Dallas Wimberley, Hunter Simmons, and Maddie Simmons; three great grandchildren, Kennedy Stoffa, Aiden Stepp, and Lily Ward; seven step grandchildren; five great step grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 11, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with Reverend W. Pembroke Hall officiating. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor.
