Louis Decker Lee, 91, of Hollywood, Florida, went to his Heavenly Home on December 26, 2020.

Decker was born in Anderson, Indiana in 1929 just before the Great Depression, during which his once prosperous parents lost everything. As a young man, he moved to Florida to care for his ailing father and met Joan, his lifelong love, on Hollywood Beach. After marrying in 1954 they spent the next 66 years together, raised three children, were proud grandparents to six grandchildren, and welcomed many endearing animal friends (dogs, cats, ducks, geese, turtles, snakes, rats, and fish) into their home. Decker was always there for his wife and children at each expected and unexpected turn. He made the most out of his own hardships and anonymously engaged in acts of kindness for others that only became known years later. He placed family above all else.

Decker was a self-made man who strived to make things better one handwritten checklist at a time. He served in the US Army during the Korean War; worked his way over three decades into management at the Miami Herald (where he was instrumental in many production changes); served as president of the Hollywood Jaycees (where he led the effort to install the first lights on the South Broward High football field), International Jaycees, St. Mark's Lutheran Church, and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church; and coached generations of grade schoolers in basketball and life. Decker enjoyed a good game of poker and counted many players as friends. During a long retirement he was most happy spending time at his second home in the mountains of North Carolina, where he traded beer, pretzels, and football for chopping wood and blowing leaves, volunteer firefighting, dabbling in antiques and collectibles, and befriending the bears, deer and other wildlife which frequently visited the property.

To the end, Decker kept his witty and dry humor, taste for good cheeseburgers, and strong love for his family. Louis Decker Lee is survived by his wife, Joan; daughter Patia, husband Kevin, and grandsons Matthew and Nicholas Bowman; daughter Tracy, husband William, and grandchildren Noelle and Luke Sterner; and son George, wife Carol, and grandchildren Grant and Evelyn Lee. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Sr. and Esther Lee, and beloved brothers James Jr., Bill, and George.

The funeral service will be officiated by Decker's close friend Pastor George Poulos at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church at noon on January 2, 2021. Viewing at Gloria Dei begins at 11:30 am, and burial will take place at Hollywood Memorial Gardens North following the service. Funeral arrangements are made by Fred Hunter's. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be given to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. The family wishes to thank the staff and administration of Memorial Manor in Pembroke Pines, Florida for their heartfelt caring for Decker during the final years of his life.
