Elizabeth Linn Bowman

Elizabeth Linn Bowman of Big Canoe died December 1. Born in Wilkinsburg, Pa., she was the only child of Mary Linn (Marks) and John H. Colbaugh. A graduate of Castilleja School in Palo Alto, Calif. and Wellesley College with a BA in art history, she married Thomas E. (Teb) Bowman III in June 1964.

They have lived permanently in Big Canoe since 2007 and had visited or had property in Big Canoe since 1982.

Coming from a long line of educators and athletes, Bowman was an A level ALTA tennis player and coach at several schools. Known as well for her artistic talent, she taught art and art history at a series of private schools and at Southern Catholic College in Dawsonville. Additionally, she was a project manager at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and executive director of Hartwood, an Alleghany County estate in Pittsburgh, Pa. Her artistic works included many in pastels and oils.

Throughout a demanding and varied career in a minimum of 14 locations, including Europe, Bowman remained a devoted wife and mother, raising two sons, James Eric and Robert Scott and continually providing resource support for her husband Teb. During this time, she was always a source of help to others as well, as displayed by her starting two separate Stephen Ministry programs: one in Big Canoe and one in Atlanta. She also participated in the chapel choir at Big Canoe.

A memorial service will be held December 18 at 11 a.m. at The Big Canoe Chapel. A reception will follow in the Broyles Center.
