JONESPORT - Oscar Daniel Hall, 83, went home to God Friday, April 25, 2014, while at home surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen Young Hall. His parents, Daniel and Dorothy Hall from Jonesport, and in-laws, Theodore and Nellie Young of Gouldsboro, all previously deceased, surely greeted him as he left this life. Also surviving him is his brother, Edward Hall of CT and sister-in-law Joanne Hall of FL, his three daughters; Serita Corey-Childs and husband Chet of Whiting, ME, Susan E. Hall of Lafayette, CO, and Shelly A. Hall of Independence, MO. There are five grandsons: Major James D. Smith and wife Ellen; Allen W. Corey II and wife Jennie; Daniel V. Smith and wife Rachel; Christopher H. Hurshman and Steven H. Hurshman, who will miss him very much. He is also survived by his great-grandsons, Jayden Corey and Jaxson K. Smith (expected to be born in June of this year), a nephew Teddy Hall and niece Jodi Hall. He also leaves behind numerous family members and friends from Maine to Missouri that he loved so much.
Growing up and graduating high school in Jonesport, he was a student at University of Maine and Wentworth College in Boston. In 1951, he joined the US Air Force and served in the Korean War, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for his outstanding service. Working as a Senior Sight Systems Mechanic, in the 508th Armament and Electronics Squadron, Oscar also received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Citation and Distinguished Unit Citation.
Upon leaving the Air Force, he was employed by New England Telephone and Telegraph for nearly 20 years, until he and Helen made the decision to move their family to Independence, Missouri where they lived for 16 years and made many wonderful friends. In 1990 they returned to his beloved Grandmother's house in Columbia, Maine to care for their elderly parents. Oscar continued working locally in carpentry, renovating their home, and serving his church. He loved music, especially Dixieland Jazz, playing the drums, dancing, and in later years, when these were no longer possible, watching Gaither Homecoming videos. However, his greatest passion was his love for God and serving others, both in creating activities for local youth and visiting the elderly and shut-ins. He was always quick to smile and tell a joke, visit friends over a cup of coffee, and tell the best stories - these are the things we will miss.
Over the past 13 years, Oscar suffered a stroke, cardiac ablation, stents, brain bleed, brain tumor, heart attack, vascular disease and lastly cellulitis, and yet he remained positive and worked tirelessly to recover enough to make daily treks to his favorite coffee spot, Byron's, to listen to the stories from the local fishermen.
A Celebration of Life "Homegoing" will be held later this summer in Jonesport, Maine at the Community of Christ Church where he served as an Elder. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Community of Christ congregation in Jonesport to help continue the ministry they bring to the community.
