Mrs. Joann Gibbs Gregory of the Elmwood Community was pronounced deceased at 1:18 a.m. Wednesday morning November 3, 2021 at the Riverview Regional Medical Center in Carthage after suffering an apparent heart attack at her Cookeville Highway home. Mrs. Gregory was 84.

The 1 p.m. Friday afternoon November 6th funeral services were conducted from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home with her son Larry delivering the eulogy and Eld. James Thomas Gibbs officiating. Burial followed beside her husband in the Garden of Everlasting Life at the Smith County Memorial Gardens.

She was born Helen Joann Gibbs on March 2, 1937 in the Elmwood Community and was one of two children, a daughter and a son of the late Floyd Alex Gibbs who died November 11, 1991 at the age of 89 and Cammie Lou Gibbs who died November 17, 1988 at the age of 74.

Her only sibling, Floyd Gibbs Jr., died March 9, 2015 at the age of 74.

Mrs. Gregory was a 1954 graduate of Smith County High School where she was an outstanding basketball player. She was in the top ten of her graduating class and was voted by her senior classmates as the most studious of the class of '54.
Perhaps because of her love for basketball in high school she remained a lifelong fan of the sport.

On December 17, 1954 she was united in marriage to Beasleys Bend Community native Larry Taylor "Buster" Gregory who preceded her in death at the age of 71 on November 30, 2006 following almost fifty two years of marriage.

Mrs. Gregory was a member of the South Carthage Missionary Baptist Church.
Following graduation she was manager of the Carthage office of the then Southern Bell Telephone Co. which was located on Fite Avenue East in Carthage and was before the advent of dial telephones.

Surviving are her two daughters, Marcia Gregory Tisdale and husband Tim, Jennifer Gregory Wright and husband Keith all of the Elmwood Community; son, Larry Gregory Jr. and wife Susanne of Salisbury, Maryland; eight grandchildren, Shawna Tisdale and fiancée Clint Whitmore of Smyrna, Christopher Tisdale and wife Krista the Rome Community, Gregory Tisdale and wife Tiffany of the Elmwood Community, Tara Myatt and husband Jeremy of Tompkinsville, Kentucky, Daniel Gregory of Princeton, New Jersey, Cammie Rich and husband Cody of Hartsville, Shelby McPeak and husband Travis of the Elmwood Community, Rachel Ford of Salisbury, Maryland; twelve great-grandchildren, Graceland, Haylen, Kayden, Keaton, Maverick, Walker, Noah, Nora, Montana, Emmy, Jack and Elisha.
