From 1957-1965 he and his wife Betty served as educational missionaries in Honduras, Central America after studying Spanish for 12 months in San Jose, Costa Rica. In Honduras Ken was chaplain of the high school, taught organic and inorganic chemistry in Spanish, reestablished, directed and taught in the new Theological Seminary for three years. He purchased and catalogued 1,000 books in Spanish for the seminary library. He serves as mission treasurer for several years overseeing a budget of a million [current] dollars. He served as legal representative for the mission when all of the church buildings, schools and clinics were transferred to the Honduran church in 1965. He also preached in both Spanish and English congregations. During their furlough year in 1960 he earned a Master's degree in Science Education at the Pennsylvania State University.
From 1965-1968 he studied for his doctorate in Sociology with emphasis in marriage and family studies at the Florida State University where he was a teaching assistant for two and a half years. In 1968 he was employed by Catawba College, Salisbury, NC, where he taught and later served as Chairman of the Sociology Department until his retirement in 1991. He was also an advisor to the Alpha Chi academic fraternity for ten years.
Ken was active in state, regional and national Family Organizations. He was treasurer of ACME, a national marriage enrichment organization. He and his wife were authors of an award-winning reference book. He wrote two other books and numerous articles in professional journals. He organized the Salisbury-Rowan Hospice.
After retirement he spent nearly ten years on the two volume work, of over 1,200 pages, on the history of the Sell family. After the death of his wife Betty in 1997, he married Evelyn Maddox in 1998 in Greensboro, NC.
Ken loved to travel. He visited total of 68 countries on all seven continents.
He is survived by his wife: Evelyn Pierce Maddox Sell, Thomasville, NC and his grandchildren: Diane Marie Tiblin, Kevin Andrew Tiblin, Jessica Anne Tablin, and Christina Marie Sell Genest, and by three great grandchild: Cashton Genest, Grue Genest and Caydebce Gebest..
He was pre-deceased by his children, Peter Daniel Sell,(FaG#176301275) and Rebecca Ann Tiblin,(FaG# 182193991) and by his brother, Dr. Dean J Sell. MD, and sister, Pearl Hockensmith.
