Originally named Hans Joachim, Johnny was born in Landsberg, Germany, during a World War II air raid. At the age of three, Johnny and his mother, Frieda Puitl, moved to the United States following the end of the war. Johnny always said that he "never wanted to pilot a plane but could definitely jump out of one!" In 1963, he enlisted in the Army and was assigned to the 173d Airborne Brigade where he proudly served his country as a paratrooper in the Vietnam War. In January of 1966, Johnny was awarded the Purple Heart after becoming wounded in action. When Johnny returned home, he continued to serve his country stateside with the South Carolina National Guard and the Air Force Reserves. In addition to his exemplary military service, Johnny worked for 33 years with BellSouth in both Charleston and Columbia, S.C. After retiring from BellSouth in 2000, Johnny fulfilled one of his dreams when he worked at Walt Disney World with his son John. Johnny is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Ann, their son John along with his daughter-in-law Samantha. Johnny also leaves behind his brother Henry, sister-in-law Kathleen, as well as his Aunt Annamarie Puitl Hogg from Virginia and two cousins. Johnny was a loyal member of South Carolina Chapter 30 of the 173d Airborne Brigade Association, and he provided small American flags for numerous parades and ceremonies in the area. Johnny's committal service included full military honors and the playing of Taps. Johnny was inducted into the Laurens County Hall of Heroes. He had a fully restored Jeep and an extensive collection of Vietnam War memorabilia. His birth father was Hans Duker. Johnny's mother's cremains are in custody of the family.
