Eric Wade Mathews, of Rolla, Missouri, passed away of an apparent heart attack on Saturday, October 30, 2021. Eric was born at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Virginia on 26 August 1964. He was a loving son of Carl and Beverly Mathews of Rolla. Eric was 57 years old.
Eric was a friend to everyone. If you needed a helping hand he would be on his way. He was employed by Missouri S&T maintaining most of the athletic fields and was licensed to do the chemical applications on the fields. Eric had been with the university for 12 years.
Most of his pastime was spent fishing with his friends and doing lawn maintenance for Harold Hall. He loved the outdoors; be it fishing, hunting or gardening. Eric had a green thumb and his landscaping skills were exceptional. Eric was a Kansas City Chiefs fan and enjoyed watching them at home, or even better, when he went to games with his best friends.
Eric was a sober, happy person and always a pleasure to be around. He was a gentle soul and loved family and friends with deep conviction. Eric accepted Jesus as personal savior when in the fourth grade when the family attended the First Baptist Church in St. James and was later baptized. Anyone who knew him, loved him.
Eric was a 1982 graduate of Rolla High School where he played football and was an avid softball player after high school. He attended Central Missouri State University for one year before returning home to pursue a career in construction. Whether it be framing houses or working in the lumber yard, Eric knew the trade and all of the people who worked in it.
To say Eric was unique was an understatement. Eric took humor to another level. Anyone who had the pleasure to be a part of his circle, has countless memories of gut wrenching laughing that never seemed to end.
Eric didn't have any children of his own, but he made up for that by being one of the World's greatest uncles. His selfless love for all his nieces and nephews left every single one of them feeling as if they were the most special kid on this planet. He took pride in spoiling each and every one of them.
No family gathering or friends getting together was complete without Eric and his guitar, from classic country to unique, humorous, self-written tunes that everyone would laugh and sing along with. Eric's presence was golden. We will miss you our dearly beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend and you will be missed greatly by us all.
Eric is survived by his loving little dog, Daisy; his parents, Carl and Beverly Mathews; brothers, Mike and wife, Janet, Mark and Alex; nieces and nephews, Mandy (David) Traub, Ryan (Sidney Ousley) Mathews, Megan (Dan Kaufman) Mathews, Lindsay (Sean) Mathews, Cole (Anna) Mathews, Hannah Mathews, and Braeden Mathews; and great nieces and nephews, Murdoc, Claytyn, Nolan, Cooper and Georgia Rae.
A funeral service for Eric W. Mathews will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 8, 2021 at the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla. Interment will follow in the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens Cemetery. A visitation for family and friends will be held prior to the service beginning at 12 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
