Joseph Charles Elkins, Sr., 95, of Chattanooga, passed away on Monday, November 1, 2021.
He was born on February 21, 1926 in Chattanooga to the late Wilburn and Marie Elkins. Joe grew up in Chattanooga and graduated from City High School in 1944. Throughout schooling, he played basketball and worked at his father's pharmacy, Squib's, in downtown Chattanooga. Upon graduation from high school, he was drafted into war where he served honorably in the World War II Field Artillery until he was honorably discharged in 1946. After his time in the war, he started college at the University of Chattanooga where he studied Chemistry and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha. After graduating UC in 1950, Joe married Jacqueline Johnson Elkins and would have celebrated 71 years of marriage on Dec. 27.
Joe spent his career in fuels engineering at TVA. During his career, he also served as a Curriculum Committee Advisor at Western Kentucky University. In 1987 he retired from TVA after 37 years, but continued to serve as a chemical coal lab inspector at TVA for two years post retirement.
Joe loved his son and grandchildren dearly. Outside of spending time with his family, he enjoyed playing golf as a member of the Chattanooga Golf & Country Club and was playing golf even through August of this year. He was a lifelong University of Chattanooga supporter and served on the UTC Alumni Association for many years. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church where he also served as a deacon.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Wilburn and Marie Elkins; his wife, Jackie Elkins; and daughter Tyler Ann Elkins.
Joe is survived by his son, Dr. Joseph C. (Kerri) Elkins Jr., of Chattanooga; granddaughters Brooke (Justin) Saucier and Kendall Elkins.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 5, 2021 at First Baptist Church, 401 Gateway Ave., Chattanooga, TN, with Dr. Thomas Quisenberry, officiating.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 4, 2021 at Hamilton Funeral Home, 4506 Hixson Pike, Hixson and on Friday, November 5, 2021 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at First Baptist Church 401 Gateway Ave., Chattanooga, TN.
The interment will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery.
