Mrs. Elizabeth Knox Swayze, 98, died Tuesday, December 11, 2007, at The Arbor in Ridgeland. Services will be held at Wright and Ferguson in Jackson on Friday, December 14, 2007, at 2 pm, with visitation an hour before the service. Visitation will also be held Thursday, December 13, 2007, from 4 pm – 6 pm. Burial will be at Lakewood Memorial park following the service.
Mrs. Swayze was born in Houston, MS, June 2, 1909, daughter of Rush Hightower Knox and Florence Bigham Knox. In 1924 the family moved to Jackson. She was a graduate of Central High School and Millsaps College where she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. She was a member of the Monday Club.
A longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Swayze taught Sunday school and was President of the Women's Bible Class. In 1982 she was awarded a life membership in the Women in the Church.
Mrs. Swayze was the widow of M. B. Swayze, founding Executive Director of the Mississippi Economic Council. She was also predeceased by a son, M. Rush Swayze and her sister, Olivia Knox Chamblin.
Survivors are her son, Rev. Richard Knox Swayze and daughter-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Richardson Swayze of Ridgeland; two grandsons, Rev. R. Knox Swayze, Jr., (Bev) of Montclair, VA and Robert B. Swayze (Meg) of Lexington, KY; granddaughters, Elizabeth S. Rawlings (Revel) of Ridgeland, MS and Martha Ann S. Denney of Newnan, GA; and nine great-grandchildren.
