Melinda was the daughter of Nathan B. Cox (d. 16 Feb 1849 Sangamon County, Illinois) and Sarah A. Williams (b. abt. 1808 Tennessee and d. 3 May 1873 Sangamon County, Illinois and buried Kelley Family Cemetery near Currin, Sangamon, Illinois). She was the sister of John Cox, Josiah Cox, William H. Cox, and Lydia C. Cox. She married John Hammonds (b. abt. 1831 Illinois) 1 July 1852 in Sangamon County, Illinois. They had one son John W. Hammonds (b. Apr 1835 Sangamon County, Illinois). Her second husband (married 29 December 1861 Sangamon County, Illinois) was Washington Archer (b. 19 July 1832 Sangamon County, Illinois and d. 12 June 1882 Sangamon County, Illinois and buried in Old Salem Cemetery, Gardner, Sangamon, Illinois). They had eight children: George Washington Archer 1864-1932, Thomas Carroll Archer 1865-1936, Minnie L. Archer 1867-1921, Mary Alice Archer 1870-1935, William W. Archer 1872-1876), Charles H. Archer 1874-1876, Estella Archer 1876-1954, and Arthur Rudolph Archer 1878-1947.
