Hester Gatty was the daughter of Sir Stephen Herbert Gatty, who served as Chief Justice of Gibraltar from January 16, 1895 to 1905, and his second wife, Katharine Morrison. She was married in 1933 to Siegfried Loraine Sassoon, the English poet and author. They had one son, George Thornycroft Sassoon.

Lochbuie is a settlement on the Isle of Mull in Scotland. Hester and her son, George, were among the most noted modern residents of the area.
