Carolyn Louise Jones was born in Carbondale, Illinois on February 1, 1955. She graduated from Carbondale Community High School and continued on to pursue law & paralegal studies from Southern Illinois University.

Carolyn was married to James Darnell Nesbitt from 1978-1987 and had 2 children; Maiya Gitryte and Hasani Nesbitt.

Carolyn worked as a court reporter, then as a paralegal for a number of years before embarking on founding her own company, not-for-profit Concerned African Women, Inc., in 1990. Carolyn lead Concerned African Women, Inc. as Founder, President & CEO for 32 years; from its inception until her untimely passing. As a premier community education & social services agency, Concerned African Women, Inc.improved the lives of children youth & families through improving reading scores, preventing juvenile delinquency, addressing family mental health & economic issues, hosting free after-school and summer programs for youth aged 7-18 and family advocacy. In recognition of its work, the agency received a 2018 Champions For Children "Program Of The Year" award from The Children's Trust; the 2015 Clinton Foundation – Alliance For A Healthier Generation "Hero Award" for excellence in after-school programming; as well as "Local" recognition as the CCDH, Inclusion Partner Champion for 2015.

With a strict outcome driven approach, Carolyn is credited with spearheading the development of CAW and its' "New Dimensions in Community Education Program" ; an innovative initiative designed to create and implement relevant programs that foster total literacy among at-promise youth by focusing on their total literacy (serves 2000 families annually). Under the "New Dimensions" umbrella, Carolyn has founded the following: The Independent Parent Council, a Family Strengthening andParent Advocacy/Training Project that works hand-in-hand with parents and schools to increase parental involvement in public education; The Synergy Service Partnership – a coalition of community-based organizations and system stakeholders dedicated to coordinating a holistic "System Of Care" for high risk families; the record breaking New Dimensions In Out-Of-School program that boasts a 90% rate on improving "Reading" scores of underserved youth and families; the "Improving Community Control" and Family Empowerment Programs, a "intervention" and "diversion" project respectively, for youth involved with the Juvenile Justice System that has contributed to the documented reductions in youth re-arrests in Miami-Dade County since 1998; the Youth-Works Project – a truancy prevention/summer youth employment initiative.

In addition, Carolyn designed all programs and wrote all grants awarded to Concerned African Women, Inc for the past 32 years.

Carolyn has been a leading proponent of youth development and community activism for 30+ years. Serving as an organizer for numerous grass roots initiatives and leading the charge for elevating education performance standards for children. She is a founding member of the Miami-Dade County Youth Crime Task Force and the recipient of numerous community service awards including the initial Children's Trust "Champion for Children Award", the Miami-Dade County Commission "Community Service Award" , the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce "Leadership Award" , the National Council of Negro Women "Businesswoman Of The Year Award" , and the 2019 Zeta Phi Beta Sorority "Woman Of The Year."

A gifted organizer, Carolyn served on the executive team for the legendary Congresswoman Carrie P. Meek during her initial congressional campaign in 1991, served as Chairperson of the EESAC – Educational Excellence School Advisory Council as well as a Chairperson of the Norland tri-plex full Service School Committee. Ms. Nesbitt has hosted world renowned celebrities and advocates for numerous events promoting the advancement of literacy. Among them are South Africa's Winnie Mandela; former Illinois Senator Carol Mosely Braun; the late Singer/Songwriter Isaac Hayes; Oscar-Winning Actor Denzel Washington and many more.

Alongside managing Concerned African Women, Inc. , Carolyn enjoyed spending time with and talking to her grandchildren King-David and Empress. She also loved attending live concerts, going on road trips, listening to old school 70's music (Al Green, James Brown, Marvin Gaye!) and was a true Woman of God; reading the bible and listening to gospel music.. She was also actively involved in and supportive of several community organizations and partner agencies as both a member and donor.

Carolyn is survived by her grand children King David & Empress, mother Alberta Camphor, brothers and sisters Leroy , Larry, Darryl, Tracy, London, and Latrisha, children Hasani & Maiya, nieces and nephews Mashonda, Meeka , & Sorrell and a extensive village of loving family and friends.

Carolyn is preceded in death by sister Joyce and Father Leroy Sr.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to a legacy gofundme where funds will be used to continue Carolyn's vision, programs, services and Carolyn's legacy of community education. The family of Carolyn wishes to thank everyone for their love, support, prayers and condolences.
