Melvin L. "Bill" Gibson, age 88, of Marion, died peacefully on Monday, November 1, 2021, at Marion General Hospital following a recent illness.

On January 27, 1933, Bill was born in Prince Frederick, Maryland, one of four children of the late George D. and Lillian May (Caulk) Gibson. He graduated from Calvert High School in the class of 1950.

Shortly following graduation, Bill enlisted to serve his beloved country in the US Air Force. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served as a military police officer, while stationed in Labrador and Korea.

Upon his honorable discharge, Bill and one of his best friends, Bob Monnette, traveled as far and wide as they could for a few years, going from place to place until they ran out of money. He then met a young lady, Constance "Connie" Sapen, whom he married in 1958. Together they lived in Mentor, Ohio, and raised two sons: Jeff and Mark Gibson.

In 1982, Bill married his second wife, Shawn Pucci and together they raised their daughter, Sarabeth Gibson.

Having an engineering and mathematical mind, becoming a draftsman came naturally for Bill. For the first part of his career, he worked in the Cleveland area, first at Fisher Body Plant in Euclid, then McDowell Wellman Engineering Co., and then Gogan Machine and finally ABC Scale in Willoughby Ohio. Then, in January of 1983, Bill, Shawn and Sarabeth moved to Bucyrus. Bill continued to work for the ABC Scale Company, which was acquired by Fairfield Engineering in Marion. After thirteen years with the company, he retired in 1996.

Very faithful, Bill was a member of the Richland Rd Church of Christ in Marion, and formerly he was a member of the Bucyrus Church of Christ.

An avid sports fan, Bill loved rooting on his beloved Cleveland Indians and Browns, and most especially The Ohio State University Buckeyes. He also enjoyed going to drag races. Growing up, Bill loved playing baseball, and he enjoyed bowling throughout most of his life, bowling in countless leagues over the years.

Helpful beyond measure, Bill was often his family and friends first call whenever they encountered a problem they needed solved. He was very creative, always designing or building things to the exact specifications needed for the project. He especially enjoyed woodworking, and would make thoughtful gifts for the ones he loved.

Bill will be fondly remembered by all who knew him as simply a good man, in every way. He was respectful to everyone, generous, good with the Lord, and always saw the best in you.

Left to cherish his memory are his three children: Jeff (Melissa) Gibson of Geneva, Mark (Tracy) Gibson of Mentor, and Sarabeth (Danny Logan) Gibson of Marion; eight grandchildren: Natasha Gibson, Amanda (Scotty) Cramb, Lindsey (Joe) Parker, Mark (Rachel) Gibson Jr., Amber (Alex) Bowers, and Evie, Aerianna, and Shelby Logan; ten great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and his furry canine companion, Angie.

Including his parents, Bill was preceded in death by two sisters: Hilda Howard and Emily Hardesty; and a brother, George William "Bubby" Gibson.

His family will greet friends from 4 – 7 pm on Thursday, November 4, 2021, at the Snyder Funeral Homes, DENZER Chapel, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Services honoring his life will also be held there at 10 am on Friday, with Minister Russell Howard officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the Marion County United Veterans Council will follow in Marion Cemetery.
